HISTORY: Weapons of Mass Destruction – Circa 1960

George Washington University’s National Security Archive, a non-profit entity which obtains and publishes declassified government documents through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), has an interesting web site with a number of provocative articles.

This brief article on a U.S. government study from 1960, regarding what was then referred to as the “Nth country problem”, underscores the fact that concerns over nuclear non-proliferation and rogue states are nothing new. Of course, in that era, U.S. policymakers were rightly focused on the looming nuclear threat from one very large, very specific country and came to place non-proliferation efforts on the back-burner. Today, our priorities and imperatives have shifted, yet the underlying concerns are awfully familiar.
