POLITICS/WAR: Shameful
I’ve generally been a defender of the 9/11 Commission, but publicly berating New York Police and Fire Department officials over their responses to the World Trade Center attacks strikes me highly inappropriate. Michele Catalano, who’s been a critic of the Commission from the start, has stronger words. I’m sure the Commission gave some nods to the incredible bravery and losses of the NYPD and NYFD on September 11, but going on to throw red meat to the bitterest of victims’ family members seems a poor way to offer constructive criticism. While I’m sure there are some emergency response procedures and approaches which can, and have been, improved since that day, I don’t like the idea of attacking local officials - who bore the brunt of the tragedy - for what was basically a national and international problem and, above all, an act of premeditated, willful murder by foreign enemies. Right now, Rudy Giuliani is testifying. Comments
Disgraceful sums up the entire commission. Whatever positives Lehman may have achieved in his life up to now will be overshadowed by his stupid comments yesterday. If this was proposed with the intent of improving our readiness, the commission would have been composed of people with expertise in the various fields being reviewed. They would have the different groups of experts review the different parts of the event and the years leading up to 9-11. You would not have a police commissioner review decade old CIA reports and you would have some hack politician pretending to understand police and fire response procedures. Worst part of this whole stupid idea is putting camera's within a mile of politicians. Once camera's got involved objectivity and purpose went out the window. President Bush needs to point to this mess the next time an idiot complains that he didn't want this commission. He obviously had good reason to suspect it would be a waste of time and taxpayer resources. Posted by: William Keane at May 19, 2004 11:03 AMPost a comment
