WAR: The Hostage
I can't add much to Captain Ed's words on people rushing to judgment about Jill Carroll. The animosity directed at Carroll in some quarters of the blogosphere is way overheated. There's an interesting strategic question why she was treated relatively better than some other hostages and released alive, but as is often true of these things we may never know the answer. On the other hand, people trying to smear the conservative movement by equating one of Don Imus' nitwit sidekicks with real, thinking conservatives just don't know what they're taking about.
It's not like it hasn't happened before - look at Yvonne Ridley (?). Same sort of circumstances - far left reporter, gets kidnapped, when released starts making nutty statements. The real test will be 2-3 months down the line if Carroll decides to convert to Islam like Ridley did....
Carroll's sin, if she committed one, was naivete.
She went about in Iraq too cavalierly, too trusting of the place and its people. She's young. Whatever she said, she said. The tears and spaced out look of the first few videos tell a truer story than her pre-release statements, I think.
Bernard's a liberal by my way of thinking...
